The capital of UK is London. London is also the capital of England. In fact the government resides in London.
The UK is a constitutional monarchy, which means the Parliament governs the country, not the monarchy.
The Parliament in the UK is divided in two houses:the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The monarch of UK is Queen Elizabeth II of Windsor, belongs to the Windsor Dynasty.
Originally Elizabeth's family name was different, it was German:Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Elizabeth's grandfather, king George V, changed the name to Windsor in 1917 because in that period, having a German name was very unpopular.
As Head Of State, the Queen goes on official State visits abroad. She also invites other world leaders to come to the United Kingdom. During their visit, Heads of State usually stay at Buckingham Palace, or sometimes at Windsor Castle or Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
The Queen is also the Head of the Armed Forces. She is the only person who can declare when the country is at war and when war is over.
She is Head of the Church of England. The Queen appoints archbishops and bishops on the advice of the Prime Minister.
The Queen represents the nation at times of great celebration or sorrow. One example of this is Remembrance Day ceremony. The Queen lays a wreath there each year to honour the members of the armed forces who have died fighting for their country.
The British Royal Family
The British Royal Family is the family group of close relatives of the monarch of the United Kingdom.
The monarch of the UK is Queen Elizabeth II, the first child of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
Her grandfather was George V, and he changed the name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor.
At the death of George, his son Edward VIII became king, but he was king for a very short period because he abdicated to marry the woman that he loved.
So, Edward's brother, George VI, became the new king of England and he was Elizabeth's father.
When George died, Elizabeth became the Queen of England.
Elizabeth's husband is Prince Phillip of Edinburgh.
They had four children:
-The first son is Prince Charles, who has the title of Prince of Wales. It means that when Elizabeth dies, Charles will become the new king.
-Princess Anne is the second child;
-The third is Prince Andrew, Duke of York;
The last child is Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.
Charles, in 1981, married Lady Diana Spencer and they had two children:William and Harry.
But in 1992 the British Prime Minister announced their formal separation in Parliament, because the couple's incompatibility and age difference had become visibile and damaging to their marriage.
When Diana died in a car crash on 31 August 1997, Charles flew there to accompany her body back to Britain.
In 2005 he married her previous girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles.
Charles' son, William, married Catherine Middleton on 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey and on 22 July 2013 was born their first child, Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge
